Standards Regarding Indications for Echocardiographic Examinations
Standard I1: Echocardiographic Laboratories will have mechanisms which ensure that a standard indication is documented as a component of every referral.
Standard I2: For referrals without a standard indication, laboratories will have mechanisms whereby referring physicians are contacted for clarification before the study is carried out. Based on that clarification, the study will be carried out at the discretion of the supervising physician.
Standard I3: Echocardiographic Laboratories will have mechanisms to track indications of completed studies, ensure that at least 95% of studies carried out meet standard indications, provide education of referring physicians regarding appropriate indication for echocardiography examinations.
